What Should I Do?
First, get to a safe place - anywhere away from your attacker.
DO NOT blame yourself for the assault! Realize it was not your fault and now you need to do what is best for you.
Victims who have experienced sexual assault are in need of specialized care. Please dispatch a SANE as quickly as possible by calling (575) 226-SANE (7263).
- Please try not to eat or drink anything, or smoke prior to coming in for a SANE exam. Bring the clothing you were wearing during the attack with you as well in a paper bag.
The sexual assault examination will be explained to you to enable you to make an informed choice and provide consent for care. SANEs provide prompt, compassionate care in a safe environment. They also provide resources our patients need.
If you do not want to report the assault immediately, still consider the following:
- Have a SANE exam. Victims may or may not have physical injuries and it is best to be seen by a trained medical professional for evaluation. It is important to determine the risks of STIs and pregnancy and have the option of preventive medications.
- The SANE can collect forensic evidence and have it stored in case you decide to report at a later date.
- Five free confidential counseling sessions are available by trained counselors.
Know that it's never too late to call–even if the attack happened years ago, Counselors will still offer five free counseling sessions. Many victims do not realize they need counseling help until months or years later. |
